HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK

Ongoing Ranger / Naturalist programs include guided walks, hikes, as well as programs on geology and natural and cultural history and 15 to 20 minute presentations. In the Summit area, special evening star watching programs are conducted periodically. Occasionally special all day and half day hikes, three day service trips, or full moon hikes are offered. ASTRONOMY TOUR OF THE STARS

SUNSET CLIFF-DIVING
Date: Every evening
Place: Sheraton Maui, Kaanapali (West Maui)
The Sheraton Maui rests atop the famed black rock, Puu Kekaa, site of many Hawaiian legends. A torchlighting and cliff diving ceremony is enacted each evening right before sunset. The public can watch a young man in ancient Hawaiian garb light torches as he runs to the rock's summit. Perched at the top, he dives off the cliff into the calm waters surrounding the landmark. WHALERS VILLAGE ENTERTAINMENT
Place: Kaanapali Resort (West Maui)
Enjoy free entertainment and activities at Whalers Village Center Stage. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, watch Polynesian dances from 6:30 to 7 pm then Tahitian dances from 7:30 to 8 pm. Through the National Park Service, Kipahulu Ohana offers one-hour tours of taro patches and moderate hikes into neighboring forest. SUGAR MILL OPERA

Maui artist and filmmaker Tom Sewell’s fascination with Hawaii’s sugar mills has compelled him to create a multi-media installation project, complete with industrial video production, music accompaniment and large sculptural elements. Projected images of gigantic sprockets, gears and vats of boiling sugar, synchronized with a polyphonic symphony of machinery, fill the gallery space for a unique exhibit. Free admission. THE HAWAII STATE CHAMPIONSHIP - OUTRIGGER CANOE RACING
Date: August 5

Place: Lahaina (spons. Hawaii Canoe Racing Association)
The annual Hawaii State Championship outrigger canoe races by members of the Hawaii Canoe Racing Association. A colorful and exciting visitor event with cultural entertainment at the start of the canoe races (8:00 a.m.), food booths, and arts and crafts for sale throughout the day. The Hawaii Canoe Racing Association consists of clubs from the 5 major Hawaiian islands and over 3,000 paddlers. The Regattas are measured courses broken into1/4 mile intervals. Club canoes line up in lanes marked by flags to race to their 1/4 mile flag. The day starts with 12 year olds racing first, followed by teenagers and adults. Youngsters race 1/4 mile - older, more experienced racers go 1/2 mile to two miles. The Sheraton Maui rests atop the famed black rock, Puu Kekaa, site of many Hawaiian legends. A torchlighting and cliff diving ceremony is enacted each evening right before sunset. The public can watch a young man in ancient Hawaiian garb light torches as he runs to the rock's summit. Perched at the top, he dives off the cliff into the calm waters surrounding the landmark. At 6:30pm Saturday, Dec. 2, Lahaina’s historic Banyan Tree is lit up with thousands of Christmas lights for the entire holiday season. Santa Claus makes an appearance and choirs sing Christmas carols accompanied by hula. Kids are invited to play in the snow at the “snow zone” while parents can take family photos with a Hawaiian snowman. Enjoy a holiday arts and crafts fair beginning at 11am, as well as Hawaiian musical entertainment.
